Schroder Does It Again
Throughout the winter we have compiled a number of Gabe Schroder's helmet cam videos, none of which have disappointed. Check out Schroder's latest Alaska footage.
Telus Who Won Ten Thousand Dollars at the Pro Photo Showdown
The Ski Journal's Grant Gunderson, along with five other professional surf and ski photographers competed last week at the Telus ski and snowboard festival in Whistler for a grand prize of $10,000. Check out a report and photos from the event.
Silverton Ethnography
Silverton, Colorado is uniquely coarse and welcoming; the people are original, the ski area is unbelievable, and the rum is exceptional. This past weekend, I played anthropologist, completing a cultural ethnography of the skiers, interns, owners, snow safety directors, and business owners, who characterize the only ski town in North America that transports its visitors in a refurbished milk truck.
Alaska Through The Lens of Smith's Gabe Schroder
Smith Optics' team manager Gabe Schroder doesn't disappoint with his latest addition to the Super G web series. This time in Haines, Alaska, Schroder demonstrates his ability to manage his own skiing time; Big fast turns, spines, and faceshots are all part of the mix. Check it out here.
Suzanne Graham: A Diamond Who Plays Rough
She is one of the first people I will brag about to friends: this girl base-jumps, hucks double back flips, ski-base jumps, and works as a stunt double. At one point while living in a house with Suzanne and a few other competitive female skiers we had packages addressed to the house as the “extreme estrogen establishment.” Suzanne represented a majority of the “extreme” and continues to do so; winner of the recent Red Bull Cold Rush and filming for Grete Eliassen’s upcoming movie “Say My Name”, Suzanne Graham continues to prove her exclusive talent.
Y The Movie: A Right On Brother Project
A few years ago the Giffin brothers were featured in a magazine piece illuminating the family’s talent in the snow sports industry: Jeff, the oldest and a tele-skier, Zack, the overwhelmingly motivated pro-skier, and Sam, the snowboarder and filmmaker. Now, Jeff attends UBC as a graduate student, Zack continues to push the limits on skis, and Sam still wants to capture the spirit of the sport and answer that inevitable question: Why? Why Ski? Why do we do crazy things in pursuit of our passions?
Guinness, Heli-skiing, and Jalapeno Poppers
Almost better than spending the day in Dublin, Lynsey Dyer, Zack Giffin, Grant Gunderson, and I had our cups full of Irish blessings and authenticity this St. Patrick’s day. After two days of flying around with North Cascades Heli, we ventured over to Don Fitzpatrick’s house; a Mazama resident and ambassador of Irish culture. In addition to checking out Fitzpatrick’s fine Irish pub in the basement of his house, we spent the evening with our pilot and favorite Irishman, Seamus O’Daimhin.
