Jackson Hole, Wyoming (February 25, 2010) - Imagine a contest based around sliding a beer down a table with the object being to drink as many beers in the shortest amount of time possible. This is a three round, two teams at a time, head-to-head contest with a scoring structure that awards extra points for catching beers a pint glass by the handle and doing a spin move beforehand. Yeah, you get the idea...an adult-beverage-fueled-kick-ass-contest. This is Gelande Quaffing.

Gelande Quaffing is an old Jackson Hole Air Force game that started back in the ‘80's when a beer was slid down the bar at a local Jackson Hole watering hole and a JHAF member, acting on instinct, caught the pint moments before the beer hit the ground. Now 25 years deep, the World Championship Gelande Quaffing contest went down February 24, 2010 in Jackson. Teams from the who's-who of Jackson Hole businesses had thirsty quaffers registered for the event alongside company entries and even an intentional contingent: Smith Optics, Powder Magazine, Teton Village Sports, Brew Pub, New Zealand (spy's from a foreign land), Stormshow, TGR, Jackson Hole Airforce and the crowd favorite, The Stage Coach, which featured an all girls team.

Highlights of the night included the The Stage Coach (all girls) knocking out Powder magazine in the first round of the quaff, the crowd chanting 'USA' (no flags were waved) when the New Zealand team took the stage, Dammit Anne of The Stage Coach getting her front teeth knocked out by a fast sliding pint glass and local ski filmer 'RV' of the Stormshow team pounding two pint glasses at the same time.

The final round of the quaffe had Teton Village Sports going at it with local film crew Stormshow. Rumor has it that the Stormshow team was holding secret practises for weeks coming up to the event and these practise sessions sure paid off as they walked away with the title of 2010 World Gelande Quaffing Champions.

Congratulations Stormshow.

Thank you PBR, Smith Optics, Cloudveil and of course Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

(edit correction, the Stormshow team denied practises as these guys are naturals)

With Olympic mayhem going full throttle in the Pacific Northwest, I decided to avoid the media frenzy and search for snow. So, I arrived in Jackson Hole today to blue skies--a quick hike to Four Pines confirmed my decision and revealed the goods. Powder Magazine just so happens to be in town for the Powder Week and annual ski test. I'm looking forward to exploring Jackson Hole, rapping with fellow media and testing out next year's product. Sounds rough I know...stay tuned for the next transmission from Jackson.

Self proclaimed “Biggest Bike Scavenger Hunt in the World”, the New Belgium Brewery Urban Assault is a funky urban bike race which guides you all over the city—in this case, Seattle—with a bunch of unique stops along the way. While a typical bike race would be from point A to point B, this one was a bit different as it requires navigating a team to checkpoints around the city without a pre-set course. The catch was that each location has interesting activities to accomplish before moving onto the next stop. Big Wheels, horsehoe toss, three-legged race, two-person skateboarding…you get the idea. The first team to cross the finish line receives a super sweet pair of New Belgium Bikes and bragging rights for the next year.

While I often ride my bike to work, around town and local drinking establishments, this was my first cycling race and I was a bit worried going into it. Pre-race, being one of the few without full spandex suits and super fancy road bikes did not help my nerves. Once the race started and figured out that I could actually keep up a fast bike pace, I did settle down and gave the race all I had. After charging all over town and flying through the obstacles, the Funny Feelings LLC team crossed the finish line in a respectable 15th place. Not bad for a couple guys in cutoff shorts.

Some helpful hints from a seasoned Urban Assaulter—go fast, draft, skinny tires, take the Bonus quiz, know your route, take shortcuts and go fast—certainly helped. The Urban Assault was hands down the most fun I have ever had on a road bike and, while it may not appeal to the seasoned cycling racer, I highly recommend the race and hope to join in on the mayhem next year. The cost of entering was not cheap at $47 per perso, but includes a couple beers, swag, food, bike bell, huge price raffle and the cash goes to local charities. An all day event and well worth the entry fee.

More Urban Assault races will be going down in Austin, TX, Ft.
