Abandoned nearly 100 years ago, Gothic, CO is a ghost town in the empty mountains behind Crested Butte. It’s also one of the coldest places in the US, making it a burly place to live—and, if you’re local Billy Barr, a great place to enjoy impressive snow totals. As a hobby, Barr has been meticulously making observations on the snowpack in Gothic for over 40 years, unintentionally providing modern climate change scientists with an invaluable lode of data.
