“Heart of the Mountain” in Terrace, BC
Many of us have a small ski hill that’s near and dear to our heart. For Terrace, BC locals, that place is Shames Mountain. Tucked away far north in BC’s Coast Range, Shames is like taking a trip back through time. A fixed grip double, old T-bar, laidback base area, kids and families—it’s a warm and inviting place where everyone’s invited.
Struggling to stay afloat, in 2008, the owners put Shames Mountain up for sale for $1.2 million. Over the next few years, the community worked to raise money to put in an offer, determined to keep the resort in the hands of the local skiers. Now, the mountain is Canada’s first nonprofit, community-owned ski co-op, the hub of the winter community up in Terrace.
The 9-minute film, “Heart of the Mountain,” is an inspiring story about some of the community members who rallied together to save their local hill. It’s the heart of skiing at its core. No frills, just good old fashioned skiing.
