A December to remember.

Then, a March miracle. Powder aplenty in between. La Niña delivered as promised during the 2016-17 season at Mt. Baker Ski Area.

With an unprecedented cold snap before the holidays, we were treated to a very deep opening day and unusually light and dry conditions throughout the first month of the season. Consistent precipitation kept things fresh through the better part of mid-winter before a storm of epic proportions ushered in spring. The usual bouts of powder panic had dissipated by then, leaving local skiers and riders thoroughly satiated and rolling out tired legs for bottomless turns on repeat. By the time that 140 inches fell in just ten days at the beginning of March, our powder senses were fully tuned in, ready to soak up every bit of the plentiful pillows and spines that had grown fat during a season that saw 808 inches of snowfall, tops in North America.

This year, we were spoiled. Here’s to a legendary year at Baker—one that won’t soon be forgotten, and one that will play on repeat in our powder dreams until the lifts spin again in November. In the meantime, relive the past year atop Highway 542 through this journal of abundance.
