David Reddick

Whether you know it or not, Powder Magazine’s Photo Editor David Reddick has shaped ski imagery more than any other individual in the past quarter-century. A talented skier and photographer, his honest perfectionism has been a driving force in the development of ski photography as we know it today–and he isn’t a bad skier, either.

My first night in a tent with David Reddick occurred in March 1993 at a remote trailhead in Nevada’s Toiyabe Mountains. Reddick was in his first year as Powder Magazine’s photo editor and I was in my third as senior editor. We were already good pals and Reddick has since become one of my best friends. But I busted his chops anyway. As I later wrote in Powder, “Sleep was fitful to begin with and ended completely when David sat up in the tent and began stroking and brushing his long, luxuriant hair as if auditioning for a Pantene commercial. He didn’t say a word, but I could imagine what he was thinking: Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.”

Thing is, I don’t remember if the hair-brushing actually happened. Back then, my follicle envy overrode all notions of personal decency. It may have convinced me to mendaciously tweak Reddick in print.

David Reddick, see, stirs a lot of envy…
